The Turmeric Collection references the power of the sun near the equator and the unique places that define it such as Florida, India, and Italy. These travels have shaped my work, and by using both the color of turmeric and now as a golden yellow dye, it yealds dynamic and youthful shades.
The use of turmeric dates back nearly 4000 years to the Vedic culture in India, where it was used as a culinary spice and had some religious significance. It probably reached China by 700 AD, East Africa by 800 AD, West Africa by 1200 AD and Jamaica in the eighteenth century. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects, is a very strong antioxidant, and dyes with just a few tablespoons in water.
Using block resists and making designs with concentric circles, the wearables are soft and light. My appreciation for upcycling goes back to my rural roots in Pennsylvania, and I combine my travels and personal narrative into wearables and textiles. The spherical objects can adorn any tree this season or be hung independently to bring a third eye into your life.
